Mitigation Logbook
About
Mitigation Logbook is a voluntary, applicator-held record of whether a pesticide label's mitigation measures were carried out: after each application it asks the applicator, logs the answer or the non-response, and closes the case with a mitigation receipt.
The applicator never has to install anything, log in, or visit this site. They reply to a text.
It sits beside EPA's PALM app, Acre Blitz, and Farm-MIT and replaces none of them. Use whatever calculated your plan; this starts where those tools stop.
You run the cohort
See who followed through. Settle the unclear ones. Keep the receipts.
You are applying
One field, one product. Get reminded, reply in your own words, keep the record.
The loop
- Plan. Enter the field and the product. The label's requirements and the county bulletin set the points, the weather limit, and the actions.
- Remind. In this demonstration, the applicator gets a text 24 hours after the planned date, and again at 48 if there's no reply. Those timings are our design choice, not an EPA rule.
- Confirm or expire. They reply in their own words or tick a checklist. In this demonstration, no reply by 72 hours closes the case as expired (also our design choice).
- Verify. The reply is checked against the plan: bulletin saved, practices in place, wind within the limit.
- Review. If something is missing or contradicted, the cohort partner decides and records why.
- Receipt. A dated PDF with the full timeline, the check, and a hash, for the applicator's records and the partner's file.
Steps 1, 2, 3, and 6 are rule-based today. Reading the label into requirements and interpreting free-text replies will use a model later. The model layer is not enabled in this demonstration. Today the demo's strength is the deterministic loop.
Who runs a cohort
A cohort partner is the organization that runs a group of cases and stands behind the records, defined by what it does, not by a county title. This demonstration shows a training cohort: each participant in an applicator training class walks one real field through the loop as an exercise.
The operating partner in the field is typically the business that carries application liability: a retailer or cooperative with custom application, a commercial applicator company, a crop consultant, or the farm itself. Extension educates; it is the teaching channel. Retailers and applicator businesses are the operating channel.
What this demonstration is not
- No live applicators and no live text messages.
- Sample data only: educational, not legal advice. The pesticide label controls.
- Not a calculator, not Bulletins Live! Two, and not legal clearance.
- The AI label reading is optional and off in this demonstration. Plans always use hand-verified label values; the AI reading is scored against them in the documented evaluation set.
What a calculator gives you
Points, buffer, date: a printout. EPA's own note on PALM: “This tool will not retain any of the information entered here.”
What a closed case gives you
The same numbers, then the timeline, the reply, the verification table, the decision, and a hash. A deployed version would keep the case record for two years (proposed retention policy); this demonstration does not enforce it, and its sample records are reset. Where the label speaks to recordkeeping, the receipt quotes it.
